Historical fiction for Catholic formation

Good historical fiction can do more than supply dates and costumes. It can help a young reader imagine what a culture believed was worth building, preserving, suffering for, and handing on.

The Boy Knight of Reims is especially useful here because Catholicism is structural to the story. Reims Cathedral is a church, a work of sacred art, a place of memory, a civic center, and eventually the setting for the coronation of Charles VII in the presence of Joan of Arc.

A documented homeschool readership

The book is currently assigned in Our Lady of Victory School’s Grade 6 reading curriculum and listed as Supplemental Required by Mother of Divine Grace School.

Its appeal is broader than curriculum utility. The novel assumes that craftsmanship, disciplined attention, beauty, courage, religion, and historical inheritance can themselves form the substance of an adventure for young readers.
