The earliest reviewers immediately recognized Halliburton’s defining effect: the book made ordinary life feel dangerously easy to abandon.
A surprisingly broad reception
At least nine identifiable review appearances survive from the first months after publication, including notices in the Boston Transcript, Saturday Review of Literature, Literary Review, Outlook, New York Herald Tribune, New Republic, New York World, Commonweal, and a syndicated newspaper book survey.
The critical response was mixed even though the commercial response soon became overwhelming.
The book as contagious escape literature
One of the earliest recovered notices jokes that parents should not be surprised if a son reads Halliburton and disappears at dawn.
That is nearly the perfect description of his intended effect. The reviewer’s problem was not geographical inaccuracy. It was that Halliburton made escape look emotionally plausible.
Commonweal
Commonweal recognized the book as a modern adventure tale built around an attractive young narrator who refuses to mature.
The review admired Halliburton’s authentic experiences and personal charm while also finding the success somewhat facile, a judgment that anticipates much later criticism.
Saturday Review and emotional inebriation
The Saturday Review of Literature famously described Halliburton’s travel period as one of “emotional inebriation.”
The phrase is perfectly double-edged. It recognizes the intoxicating force of the prose while suggesting that sobriety, depth, and judgment have been sacrificed.
The jacket blurbs
Later dust jackets excerpted praise from outlets including the Chicago Post, Boston Transcript, Memphis Commercial Appeal, and Detroit News.
Those blurbs are excellent evidence of how the book was marketed, but they should not automatically be treated as complete reviews.
